Chess is a board game for two players. It's an excellent strategy game for which the player's intelligence and concentration are necessary, to the point that the game is also known as “science game”. If that wasn't enough, Chess is also considered a sport all around the world and it has fans of all ages and all nationalities.
“Chess is game for its shape,
an art for its content
and a science for its difficulty.
(...) If you learn to play well,
you'll then feel happiness”
Tigran Petrosian
How to play Chess:
The Chess Board has 64 squares (8 by 8). Each player gets 16 pieces, light for one player (usually white) and dark for the other (usually black).
First of all it's necessary to know the possible Chess moves. Each piece has its own way to move, that's why Chess has a very wide number of plays.
The King: It's the most important piece in Chess, since the purpose of the game is to capture the opponent's King. The King has total freedom of movement, it can be moved one square in any direction. The King has a special move called “Castling”. To find out what Castling is click here. When the King is being attacked by the opponent's pieces and it's threatened to be captured, the player will be warned with the word “Check”. When the King is about to get caught and it doesn't have a way out of it, the player attacking has to say Mate.
Queen: The Queen is, without a question, the most powerful piece in the Chess game, because it has even more freedom than the King: it can move in any direction as many squares as it wants.
Rook: This piece moves only in a straight line horizontally or vertically.
Bishop: Moves only in a diagonal line.
Knight: The Knight is the only piece that can “jump” over other pieces. Other particularity it has it's that the squares it goes to will always be a different color than the one it comes from.
Pawn: It moves one square at a time, except when it first moves, then it moves two squares. The Pawn moves straight forward, but it moves diagonally when it captures an opponent's piece. The Pawn has two special moves: “taking en-passant” and “promote”. To know more about this moves, click here.
