Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister of Israel, has decided to bring back and stimulate the discussion over the installation of a new casino in the city of Eilat. After a three-year pause over the matter, the plan to install casinos in the country has reemerge as a possibility to increase the taxes collected by the government.
For this purpose, two teams have been assembled: one of them is studying the possibility of creating a gambling center and preparing, at the same time, a report to discuss the viability of the installation of a resort and casino and the ways by which it would be operated, considering private hands and the state.
The other team is considering a possibility for which the lottery would be responsible for operating a casino and they will elaborate a detailed plan that includes a gambling center that will be presented directly by the Prime Minister.
At the moment, traditional casinos are illegal in Israel. After the closing of a casino in the city of Jericho some years ago, the Israeli have had to travel abroad or gamble in floating casinos.
